Everything you need to know about TurfGolfEvents.
Getting Started
Is it really free?
Yes. Single day events are completely free — no credit card, no signup fee, no limits on features. You get live scoring, display board, handicaps, side games, and full scorecards. We make money on multi-day golf trip competitions ($50 one-time) and facility pro annual plans ($149/year).
Do I need to create an account?
As an organizer yes — you create a free account to set up your tournament. Players do not need accounts. They go to turfgolfevents.com/play, enter their name and the event password the admin gave them, and land straight in their scoring screen.
Do players need to download an app?
No. Everything works in the browser on any phone, tablet, or computer. No download, no account for players. Just open the link and start entering scores.
How long does setup take?
About 2 minutes for a basic tournament. Add your event name, pick a format, add your players, set an event password, and share turfgolfevents.com/play with your group. For Points Tour you'll want 5-10 minutes to add players, courses, and sessions.
Scoring & Handicaps
How do handicaps work?
You bring each player's handicap index — we don't issue official handicaps. Enter the index plus the course Slope and Rating, and we calculate each player's Course Handicap using the same World Handicap System math the USGA and GHIN use: HI × (Slope ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − Par). Strokes are then given on the right holes by Stroke Index — SI 1 first, then SI 2, and so on, with net scores figured automatically.
What formats are supported?
Scramble, Best Ball (Match Play and Stroke Play), Shamble (Match Play and Stroke Play), Singles Match Play, and Stroke Play. For multi-day events, all seven formats are available per session and you can mix formats across sessions.
Can I use gross scoring without handicaps?
Yes. When creating your event you can choose gross or net scoring. With gross scoring, no handicap calculation is applied — just raw scores.
How are strokes distributed?
By Stroke Index. SI 1 is the hardest hole and gets a stroke first. A player with a Course Handicap of 9 gets strokes on the 9 hardest holes (SI 1 through SI 9). Players with handicaps over 18 get 2 strokes on the toughest holes.
What is the scramble handicap formula?
For 2-person scramble we use the WHS formula: 35% of the A-player's Course Handicap plus 15% of the B-player's. For 4-person: 25% + 20% + 15% + 10%.
Display Board
How does the display board work?
Every event gets a display board URL. Open it in any browser connected to a TV — a laptop with HDMI, a Chromecast, a Fire Stick in browser mode, anything. The leaderboard updates automatically every few seconds as scores are submitted. No refresh needed.
Does the display board work for free events?
Yes. Every event — free or paid — gets a live display board.
Can I show ads or sponsor logos on the board?
Yes, on the Facility Pro plan. You can upload sponsor logos and ad images that rotate alongside the leaderboard. Free events show the TurfGolfEvents branding.
Can I show multiple events on one display?
The display board shows one event at a time. Facility Pro users can open multiple browser tabs or displays for different events simultaneously.
